Yesterday, I posted about how to overcome the habit of sleeping off when studying. There were a some helpful points stated there. Open it now .
Today, am going to talk on the aspect of reading and retaining What you've read, I call it Effective Studying. Here are simple tips to help you.
First
You have to understand yourself and What works best for you. There are some tips to help you.
1. Form the habit of studying.
This is simple when you develop that sense of responsibility and consciousness that you've got to get the knowledge to keep it and not just to pass your exams. After each day's classes, take a summary of What you've had for the day, try to remember all and have learnt and try to learn What you couldn't, don't wait till the next day cos the next day is coming with it's own duties too.2. Take notes
There is a difference between reading and studying, in reading, the concentration is not as much as the one your have when you study, when studying, take notes, underline key points and put down important facts, keep it safe in one jotter for easy reference. You don't really have to go back to that book during revision, just take your jotter and go through it, if you've formed the habit of reading, it is definitely going to work out well.3. Repitative resitation
This is different from craming because, logically, you memorize a sentence word for word when you cram but in this one, you can put the sentence in your own words and that makes it easier to remember. But note that this method is not allowed when you have to state laws of define something, you must state the sentence as it is.4. Evalution at intervals
There is a pettern I adopted for this and it's working. When am studying, I form questions out of What am studying and after each page, I try to answer those questions and the ones I couldn't get right, I had a look at it again, after about 15 minutes or so, I try the question again. I do this repetitively till I get used to both the question and it's answer.5. Summary evaluation
This works in two Good ways.1. After each topic subject or course, ask yourself questions to know if you really learnt What you read, the ones that you couldn't learn should be noted and the questions should be taken to your tutor, lecturer or someone who you know knows it better.
2. After all the studying, when you are going other things, keep reciting What you've read in your mind and make it part of you, it will stick in your head for a long time.
6. Group...
While this method is accepted by some students, others will prefer studying alone because group studying distracts them and slows them down, now, Why not try something new?-you can have a study group who come together after studying to evaluate themselves and answer each other's questions.
-you can have a study group that study together but in silence and total concentration, then after the study, you all can come together, answer questions and get to play games in form of questions and answers. Sounds like fun right?
A study group is important as you stand to gain from the knowledge of others. But it's not advisable to stay without reading till you are with your group and they want to read. Just study with or without them.
